Transcription: Lacking only the material resources to become a great imperial power, Japan set out to conquer its Asian neighbors in search of those resources. Catching the British, Dutch and other European colonial powers by surprise, the newly modernized Japanese military swiftly took control of much of the South Pacific in a vice-like grip.
